Music of 2017 – part two

chalk stones stackNeil Young – Harvest Moon, 1992 – an old favourite for chilling on a winter’s afternoon
Black Sabbath Black Sabbath, 1970 – first and best. What is this that stands before me? Prompted by their last concert.
Illusion – Out of the Mist, 1977 – Jim McCarty, ex-Yardbirds and Rennaissance drummer interviewed recently by Johnnie Walker. This led me on a progressive (or symphonic) rock stream including
Renaissance – A Song for All Seasons, 1978 – which includes the famous ‘Northern Lights’
Renaissance – Academy of Music (Live), 1974
Tinariwen – Elwan, 2017 – a fine bit of world music

Katie BradleyMore preparation for Broadstairs Blues Bash
Will Johns – Hooks & Lines, 2014
Robin Bibi – No More a Secret, 2016
Guy Tortora – Bluesman in a Boneyard, 2015
Andy Twyman – Blues You Haven’t Heard Before, 2014
Troy Redfern Band – Backdoor Voodoo, 2015

We had a great weekend. One stand-out was the scratch-band at The Pavilion with Matt Long of Catfish Blues Band singing ‘Tennessee Whiskey’. He also guested with Katie Bradley Band at Neptune’s Hall and there it is on YT (with 171 views!) at the Half Moon, Putney. It was much better than George Jones’s country version (YT) and better than Chris Stapleton and some other bloke (YT) Here’s Catfish playing on YT ‘How Blue Can You Get?’ (BB King)

We have seen Fairport Convention again. The Gulbenkian Theatre on the campus of University of Kent, Canterbury is a good-sightlines, comfortable seats, spacious facilties, easy-parking venue. Fairport Convention is currently touring a 50th anniversary set and album (50:50 @ 50) with magnificent support from Sally Barker who joined them to sing a few of the Sandy Denny songs.
Fairport Convention – 50:50 @ 50, 2017

We have seen Sally Barker in Fotheringay twice and in The Poozies. She was a finalist in series 3 of The Voice and mentored by Tom Jones.
Sally Barker – Maid in England, 2014
Sally Barker – Ghost Girl, 2017

With Folk in the Barn using the Gulbenkian Theatre as a regular venue we are attracted to the reformed five-female group who made
Daphne’s Flight – Daphne’s Flight, 1996

I heard Chris Evans play Voodoo Child (Slight Return) on the radio so was inspired to listen, in entirety, to
Jimi Hendrix – Electric Ladyland, 1968

The Brits provide a window on what’s popular (by whatever critieria), so I gave a listen to
Rag’n’Bone Man – Human, 2017
The 1975 – I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it, 2016 –  a bit too electro for my liking
Emile Sande – Long Live the Angels, 2016

Rick Wakeman – Piano Portraits, 2017 – an articulate, funny, self-deprecating enthusiast.
Neil Young – Everyone Knows This is Nowhere, 1969 – because Brian Mathew played Cinnamon Girl on his last Sound of the Sixties, which is the end of an era, and it rounds of where this list started.

A good month, eh? Comments welcome.
